2026 ART TAIPEI

2026 ART TAIPEI | Taipei International Art Fair. Liang Gallery will present eighteen artists from Taiwan and Hong Kong. Through a cross-generational creative narrative, the exhibition showcases the diverse facets of Taiwanese art as it evolved from modern to contemporary.
Centered on pioneering Taiwanese artists CHEN Cheng-po and YANG San-Lang from the Japanese colonial era, the show features precious, historically significant masterpieces that reveal the artistic vision forged by early Taiwanese artists at this juncture between Eastern and Western cultures.
Between the 1950s and the 1970s, the global wave of abstract art reached Taiwan. Artists began by studying Western modern art, then gradually explored and forged their own version of Eastern modernity. Through works by artists such as LIAO Shiou-Ping and LEE Chung-Chung, this exhibition traces the fascinating trajectory of the development of modern art in Taiwan.
Taiwanese landscape painting reflects urban development, natural scenery and ordinary people’s lives. LEE Chin-Hsien is renowned for depictions of railway culture, while LIU De-Lang is famous for portrayals of mountains and forests. From these distinct perspectives, they capture both their memories of the land and their sentiments towards their hometowns.
The exhibition also brings together ten contemporary Taiwanese artists, including many brand-new works. Drawing on diverse themes, media and creative vocabularies, they demonstrate the rich and continuously evolving landscape of contemporary Taiwanese art.
Hong Kong artists Simon Yam and Rex CHAN are specially invited to participate. Both have creative backgrounds deeply connected to Hong Kong cinema culture. Leveraging life experiences, visual observation and new media, they express Hong Kong’s unique urban culture and visual language, offering Taiwanese audiences fresh viewing experiences.
Featuring eighteen artists spanning different generations, regions and mediums, Liang Gallery revisits the developmental trajectory of Taiwanese art: from historical heritage and explorations in modern art to contemporary innovation. It also seeks to situate Taiwan within a broader Asian cultural perspective. Ranging from memories of the land and Eastern modernity to today’s cross-media and cross-regional artistic practices, the artworks enter a dialogue with one another, mirroring social and cultural shifts across the eras. This presentation at ART TAIPEI is not merely a retrospective of a century of Taiwanese artistic development. It also hopes to spark, within Taipei and then beyond, deeper, long-term exchanges between Taiwan, Hong Kong and the international art market.
